CONTINUITY

CONTINUITY

Product Description:

56 days. (Merveille des 4 Saisons) This popular variety is one of the most widely grown lettuces in the world. Gardeners grow Continuity for how it looks as well as how it tastes. A real beauty, it features bronze-red outer leaves that encase a tightly packed, light green head measuring 12-16 inches across. The thin-leaved head has a divine flavor. This French heirloom is a staple in the European winter garden.

Vigorous plants, poor germination rates

Very low (under 20%) initial germination rate. 3 batches of cell trays planted into the usual well finished sifted compost I use for most seeds. Most recent batch was done at around 45-50 degrees and came back about 25%. The others were in the mid 60s, and were closer to 10% germination.

Other lettuces are doing great under identical conditions, I'm not sure what's going on with this one, but I dont want to give up on this variety just yet. If there are special germination parameters specific to this strain, it would be nice to know about it (thinking super cool temps with short fluctuations of warm and maybe more airy starting medium?). They're definitely finicky. Please and thank you Territorial Seed!

That said, the plants that have sprouted and now made it outside are the leaders in my early spring garden on the northwest Washington coast. They seem to be showing off in terms of relative vigor and even surviving light frosts while putting on good growth! They are starting to show a blush of red and are as nice to look at as (I hope) they are to eat!

I'm going to try them again in late summer/fall for winter lettuce on the maritime Washington coast, thinking these may turn out to be some real winter contenders out here!

Perhaps we will get better germination next go round.

2 year planting No germination

No germination. 1st year very low germination. Have always had good luck with this seed.

So sorry to hear that has been the case! We do germ test all of our seed and won't sell the seed if it doesn't pass, and Continuity's most recent testing passed at 87%. As always our products are backed by our full guarantee. We want you, our customers, to be 100% satisfied with the seed, plants and supplies that you purchase from us. If anything you buy from Territorial proves to be unsatisfactory, we will either replace the item (if available) or refund the purchase price, whichever you prefer (for up to 1 year from purchase). Mixed Reviews - poor germination

Really poor germination. I wanted to give this a good review because the lettuce itself is very tasty, but the germination is horrible. I've tried sowing them on three occasions with 30 seeds each time, and have only had 3 plants grow large enough to be called a head of lettuce. This last sowing had none germinate even though I had other varieties of lettuce seeds all germinate.

So sorry to hear that! That's definitely not the norm. We do germination testing on all of our seed and won't sell it if it doesn't pass! The most recent test results for this seed at the end of 2023 show a 96% germination rate.

Can't get it to grow

Under conditions where other lettuces are doing well, I either can't get this to germinate at all or the plants don't get very far after that. Growing in Portland.

Days to maturity are calculated from date of direct seeding.

Culture
• Lettuce performs best in cool weather, 60-70°F, and grows in a wide range of soil types
• Plant as early as soil can be worked
• For extended harvest, plant every 2-3 weeks and choose heat-tolerant varieties for summer
• Lettuce seed can be sown every month from February—October
• A cold frame and cold-hardy varieties can stretch the spring and fall growing season into the winter months
• Apply 1 cup of TSC's Complete fertilizer per 10 row feet, and 1 inch of compost
• 1 gram of seed will sow 30 row feet
• Consistent, even watering is critical for best results

Direct Sowing
• Use row cover to improve germination and prevent soil crusting
• As soon as 2-3 true leaves have formed, thin loose-leaf types to 10-14 inches apart; icebergs, butterheads, and romaines to 12-16 inches apart

Transplanting
• Start indoors 4-6 weeks before anticipated transplant date

Insects & Diseases
• Common pests: Aphids and slugs
• Pest control: Strong spray of water for aphids or applications of Pyrethrin or Neem oil, baits, traps, or Cabbage Collars for slugs

Harvest & Storage
• While picking individual leaves helps extend the season somewhat, all eventually become bitter as they begin to bolt

What is pelleted seed?
Seed that has been coated with a clay-based material to form a larger, round shape. This makes planting by hand or mechanical seeder easier and allows for more controlled sowing of small seeds such as carrots or lettuce. All pelleted seed has a National Organic Program (NOP) approved coating.
For best results, store pelleted seed in an air-tight container and use within one season.

What is seed tape?
Seed tapes are perfectly straight rows of precisely spaced crops. No more having to thin seedlings! This biodegradable tape will plant a row 5 meters (16 feet, 5 inches) long. Simply lay it in a furrow and cover with a light layer of sifted compost or soil, water and wait. Save yourself a heap of planting time with these popular vegetable and herb staples.
