Dragon Arum
Dracunculus vulgaris (P) Plant bulbs flat side up about 3 inches deep and 12 inches apart in moist, rich soil. Performs best in sunny or moderately shady areas. Apply compost after flowering for optimum fertility. Hardy in zones 6–9, but in areas with severe frost, it is best to mulch with organic matter in the fall. No doubt, this will be the talk of the garden. Straight out of a science fiction movie, everything about this plant is exotic. Tall stems give way to large, fan-like leaves. In late spring, Dragon Arum produces a shiny, port-colored spadex that is surrounded by an intensely maroon-colored spathe, all together reaching 18 inches tall. Don't plant too close to a patio or walkway as there is an unpleasant fragrance during the first few days in bloom. May take 2 years to bloom, but well worth the wait. Plant height: 3 feet.
Available only within the contiguous US.
