Broad Windsor Bean

Broad Windsor Bean

BN049

80 days spring sown. 240 days fall sown. Popular in European gardens, Broad Windsor is one of the tastiest of all dried beans and one of the largest-the size of a quarter! When eaten at the shelling stage, you'll discover why their mild flavor makes them perfect partners with many spices and herbs. Great for Falafels. The sturdy bushes stand 4 feet tall, produce 4-5 inch pods, and are reliably hardy to 12°F. Buff colored seeds.

"Vicia faba:Fava beans can be sown in the spring after the last hard frost or sown in the fall in zones 6 and above.
CULTURE: Favas work well for heavy soil and do best when well-manured. They should be sown 1-2 inches deep and 3-6 inches apart, in rows 12-30 inches apart, after the danger of frost has passed. Optimum soil temperature for germination is 60-85°F. Bears 10-15 pods per plant. For more growing tips, refer to the Bush Bean culture below.
INSECTS: Watch for infestations of aphids and treat with insecticidal soaps or Pyrethrin if necessary.
HARVEST: The favas are ready to harvest and cook as a green shelling bean when the pods drop from their erect habit on the stem and droop down. To use favas as a dry bean, follow the harvest and storage instructions in the Dry Shelling bean culture below.
SEED SPECS: Minimum germination standard: 80%. Usual seed life: 2-3 years when stored under refrigeration. One ounce sows 6-17 row feet depending on the variety; 1/2 pound is 8 ounces. Seed counts are listed in the variety descriptions.
