Medicago sativa Because non-dormant alfalfa doesn't store energy reserves within its roots for winter, this energy is used for green-matter production, nitrogen fixation, and nitrogen storage. Non-dormant alfalfa can be used as a summer green manure crop and worked under in the fall or the following spring. Best started with a nurse crop of oats. Grows to 24 inches. Fixes up to 200 pounds of nitrogen per acre. Recommended seeding rate: 1–1 1/2 pounds per 1000 square feet; 25 pounds per acre. Pre-inoculated.
