Early fall is the ideal time to plant or divide perennials. Divide large plants with a sharp spade and water in well after transplanting. It's also a great time to plant shrubs and trees, since the plants' energy goes to root growth in winter. Fall planting gives plants an extra boost and a great growing advantage over spring planting.
